What Is A Keto Mug Brownie?
A mug brownie has everything you love about a conventional brownie, except it’s healthy and made in minutes. Much like a keto mug cake recipe, it uses conventional baking ingredients and cooks the batter quickly in the microwave instead of a conventional oven. Unlike other brownie recipes, this healthy brownie in a mug contains no sugar or gluten whatsoever!
Why You’ll Love This Low Carb Mug Brownie Recipe
- Rich chocolate flavor
- Moist, fudgy texture
- Uses basic keto kitchen staples
- Cooks in less than a minute
- Just 4.2 grams of net carbohydrates per serving
- Naturally gluten-free
- Satisfies chocolate cravings fast, without sugar!

Ingredients You’ll Need
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for this keto brownie in a mug recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card below.
- ChocZero Sugar-Free Dark Chocolate Chips – Essential for any chocolate keto treat! They taste just like real chocolate without any added sugar. We’re adding some right into the brownie batter to make it more rich, plus leaving extra for topping. If you want to mix it up, ChocZero also has milk or white chocolate chips that you could use!
- Wholesome Yum Almond Flour – The fine grind in this flour makes every bite taste like an authentic brownie. If you need a nut-free option, you could try replacing the 1 1/2 tablespoons of almond flour with just 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of coconut flour (that’s a good estimate for the conversion ratio), but I haven’t tried it to confirm if it works.
- Besti Monk Fruit Allulose Blend – This sweetener dissolves perfectly into the brownie batter and locks in the moisture, all with 0 grams of net carbs. The brownie would be more dry with an erythritol-based sweetener, such as Swerve or Lakanto, so I generally don’t recommend these for brownies.
- Butter – I use grass-fed butter for the flavor and benefits, but any unsalted butter works here. You can also use coconut oil for a vegan, dairy-free alternative.
- Unsweetened Almond Milk – Make sure it is at room temperature. You can use store-bought versions or make your own homemade almond milk. Other keto milk options, including nut-free ones like hemp milk or coconut milk beverage, would also work fine.
- Vanilla Extract – Use a high-quality variety if you can — you’ll taste the difference.
- Cocoa Powder – This adds a deeper chocolate flavor than chocolate chips alone, but the chocolate chips add richness, which is why we are using both. I recommend Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
- Sea Salt – Just a pinch to balance the sweet flavors from the chocolate and sweetener.

How To Make A Mug Brownie (The Healthy Way!)
This section shows how to make a keto brownie mug cake, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique, to help you visualize it. For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see the recipe card below.
- Prepare wet ingredients. In a microwave-safe mug or ramekin, melt butter. Whisk in almond milk and vanilla. (Alternatively, you can also mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl if that’s easier, than transfer to a ramekin afterward, but I prefer less cleanup.)

- Add dry ingredients. Add cocoa powder, almond flour, Besti, and salt. Mix well. Add half of the chocolate chips to the mixture and smooth the top.

- Cook. Microwave the healthy brownie in a mug (or ramekin) for 40-50 seconds, until the top looks slightly moist but not wet. (You can also bake it in the oven at 350 degrees F, but I haven’t tested the baking time, so keep checking on it every few minutes.)
TIP: Test with a toothpick. A toothpick inserted into the low carb mug brownie should come out with a slight amount of batter that you can roll between your fingers. It might have a bit of oil pooled on top, which will reabsorb into the brownie as it cools from hot to warm.
- Garnish. Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top. (I recommend doing this while the brownie is still hot, so they get a little melty!)

Variations
It’s easy to customize this healthy brownie in a mug to suit your tastes! Try these ingredient variations:
- Use other flavors of sugar-free chocolate chips – This keto brownie mug would taste fabulous with sugar-free white chocolate chips or peanut butter chips.
- Make the batter nutty – Stir keto nuts such as walnuts, pecans, or almonds into the batter before cooking.
- Add a creamy garnish – Top your keto friendly brownie in a mug with low carb ice cream, sugar-free whipped cream, runny peanut butter, or even sugar-free buttercream frosting.
Storage Instructions
- Store: Keep leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 1 day, or in the fridge for 2-3 days.
- Reheat: Enjoy cold, at room temperature, or microwave at low power until warm. Be careful not to overheat, or the brownie will dry out.
- Freeze: Wrap the mug brownie tightly in plastic wrap and freeze. Thaw in the fridge or at room temperature before serving.

1I mad the Brownie Mug Cake recipe this afternoon for the 1st time. I always make mug cakes in a big mug and was surprised at the small amount of cake in the mug. I didn’t need to be concerned. That mug cake was very decadent, so chocolatey and delicious. I could not possible have eaten more at the time because it totally took care of my chocolate cravings. I sprinkled a little bit of cinnamon on top because I’m a fan of the chocolate/cinnamon flavor. Great job, as always, Maya. Thanks.

1Delicious treat… very fudgy and rich!
Catherine
1Awesome! So rich and decadent. It solves my yearning for chocolate. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Rikesha
1OMG, Maya 🙂 I have tried other Keto mug brownie recipes and none were near as good as this one. The others were all at least a bit dry, but yours, if I didn’t know it, I wouldn’t have guessed it was Keto!

Samantha
1I was craving a post-dinner sweet treat last night and came across this recipe…so glad I did! It was the perfect indulgence without all of the guilt. Can’t wait to make it again and again!

0I am licking the dish as I write this! I’ve been craving chocolate all night so I finally got up off the couch to make this. It’s the fastest, chocolaty, most delicious dessert in less the 5 minutes.
Where has this recipe been all my life? Thank you for this recipe it’s a keeper. And by using sugar free ingredients I don’t have the endless craving for “more”, like I do when I eat real sugar.
Rebecca
0I have never left a review on a site before, but I have to say that was absolutely the best brownie ever! Next time I’m making frosting! Thank you.
C Brady
0Love this keto chocolate, gooy brownie, just the way I like them. This one is a keeper.
Meagan
0This is so good. Perfect for those chocolate cravings! I used Splenda naturals monk fruit blend, and it turned out perfect!
Melissa
0This was really good! Very rich. Question…if I wanted to get it to rise a bit could I add baking powder? If so, how much? Better suggestions for rising are also appreciated.
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Melissa, Keto baking recipes don’t usually rise like traditional baking, so I don’t recommend adding extra baking powder.
Saira
0I really like this, so rich in flavour, just like a brownie. Gives me the chocolate fix I crave. The texture, may not be smooth, but I don’t really care, as it tastes great, and makes me feel like I’m not on a diet. I didn’t have chocolate chips, so I just used a mini dark chocolate bar 85%. Broke it into tiny pieces, and added it in.
Cindy
0I really wanted this to work. I followed it, to the letter. It just turned out to be a looses, bubbly mess. I waited for it to cool, turned hard and grainy. Sad
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Cindy, Did you use Besti sweetener? Other sweeteners turn out gritty and dry, and what you’re describing sounds like what might have happened. However, it’s normal for it to be bubbly before it cools.
Laura
0Such a delicious brownie!!
Michelle Morton
0Hi Maya! This recipe looks great, but wondering if you have it scaled for more servings? I was considering converting tablespoons and teaspoons to cups….but it didn’t come outright. Thank you, Michelle
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Michelle, You can change the number of servings you want to make right at the top of the recipe card and this will automatically convert the ingredients.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Michelle, I haven’t tried scaling it. I’m sure it would work if you increase it by 2 or 3 times, but not sure how it would do if you try to make a whole pan of brownies. I recommend this keto brownie recipe instead in that case. If you want to increase it just a bit, you can use the box next to Servings on the recipe card to scale the amounts.
Amy L Huntley
0This is the most decadent dessert ever. Just make sure you have a tall glass of cold milk!
Raquel
0Thank you for this tasty dessert recipe! Great chocolate flavor without all the sugar!
Toni

Cindy
0Oh wow, this was amazing and so easy to make! Definitely will be making it again and again!
Donna Batrone
0So easy to make and delicious. I’ve made it twice just this week!
Regina
0Followed the recipe exactly but it was more fudge-like, too moist so I scooped it all on top of some ice cream and enjoyed it that way instead. Very tasty, just not the consistency I’d hoped for.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Regina, It does come out pretty fudgy, but if it’s too moist you can just cook it a bit longer. Microwaves vary so the cook time is approximate. Hope this helps!
Andrea Thueson
