Pork Chop Seasoning Ingredients
Here I explain the ingredients for the best pork chop seasoning and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card for the dry rub recipe below.
- Sea Salt – This blend has just the right amount to end up with 1 teaspoon of salt per pound of pork chops. This is the ratio I learned from Julia Child and it works for virtually all meats.
- Garlic Powder – You could also add a teaspoon of onion powder in addition to this.
- Smoked Paprika – Or regular paprika works great as well.
- Dried Herbs – Dried thyme and dried oregano.
- Black Pepper – Feel free to swap in white pepper instead.
- Cayenne Pepper – You could also use chili powder, which would be less spicy.

How To Make Pork Chop Seasoning
To make this simple seasoning mix, just stir the ingredients together in a small bowl. Store in an airtight container, like a small glass jar.

How To Season Pork Chops
To use this spice blend, aim for 1 tablespoon seasoning per pound of pork chops. Here is an overview for how to season pork chops and cook them:
- Dry. Use a paper towel to pat the pork chops dry. (This helps keep them juicy.)
- Season. Sprinkle the pork with pork chop seasoning on both sides. For 8-ounce chops, that’s about 1/2 tablespoon per pork chop.
- Cook. Use your favorite method! You can make baked pork chops in the cooler months or grilled pork chops in the warmer months. Pan seared pork chops (pictured below) or air fryer pork chops are great anytime of year.
TIP: No matter what method you choose, cook pork to an internal temperature of 145 degrees F.
Use an instant read thermometer to check the temperature.
You can also use this spice rub in ways beyond pork recipes! Try it on chicken recipes, like baked chicken breast, too.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is pork seasoning gluten-free? Yes, pork chop seasoning is typically gluten-free, as long as no wheat or other ingredients are added.
- Is pork seasoning salt-free? Seasoning for pork chops can be salt-free or contain salt. This recipe does contain salt. If you’re watching your salt intake, you could reduce the amount of salt in the seasoning.
- Is pork seasoning sugar-free? Many pork chop seasonings do contain brown sugar. This version does not have any. If you prefer your pork rub recipe sweet, add in 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. If you want sweetness without the sugar, use my natural brown sugar substitute.
Storage Instructions
Store this spice mixture in an airtight container in the pantry. It will last 1-2 years, but the flavor is best within a year. Here are some options for storing:
- Spice Jars with Lids – This set comes with everything you need to make your own spice blend and store them properly.
- Small Jars – If you prefer to get multi-purpose jars, I use these for everything from salad dressings to spices. They are marketed for baby food, but are actually great for just about anything.
- Spice Organizers – This spice organizer pulls out to keep everything in view so that you won’t lose any spices.
Once you start making your own seasoning blends, it’s so hard to stop because they are better than what you would buy at the store and cost less, too! Try my zesty lemon pepper seasoning, Montreal seasoning for steak, spicy Cajun seasoning, or homemade fajita seasoning next time.
