GET IT NOWHere’s Why I Make This Homemade Ranch Seasoning Recipe Instead Of The Packets

I first started experimenting with this homemade ranch seasoning when I wanted to make ranch chicken. In the end, I actually made that dish using plain ol’ dressing, but the seasoning was definitely too good not to get its own place in the spotlight. And I’ve used it in so many ways since. If you love my homemade ranch dressing or Greek yogurt ranch, here’s why you’ll love this ranch seasoning recipe just as much:
- That classic ranch flavor in a dry mix – It’s herby, tangy, and garlicky in all the right ways. I’ve used a lot of ranch seasoning packets over the years, and I truly think this is so much better.
- Cleaner ingredients than store-bought – Have you seen the processed stuff in most of those packets? My version has no fillers, sugar, or added starch.
- Make ranch dressing in a minute flat – I like to keep this ranch seasoning mix on hand in my spice drawer, so I can make my own dressing with it almost instantly.
- Many ways to use it when dressing won’t work – I sprinkle it on chicken, roasted vegetables, classic roasted potatoes, and even popcorn. But make sure you check out more ways to use it below!
If you’re a ranch lover who wants a cleaner, more affordable option, my homemade ranch seasoning is for you. Make it with me!

“Wow this [ranch seasoning] is delicious! I made it to use with your chicken ranch recipe which was excellent. I have also used as a dip for your zucchini fries as well as dressing for my salads. Will definitely be making this on a regular basis.”

Ranch Seasoning Ingredients
Here I explain the best ingredients for my homemade ranch seasoning recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
- The Milk Base – The main base has some kind of milk and a tangy flavor. I’ve tested this in 3 different ways, so choose based on your priorities:
- Heavy Cream Powder & Cream of Tartar – I made this version first to avoid the extra sugar that regular milk or buttermilk has. The cream makes it rich and creamy, while the cream of tartar (which is acidic) gives it a little tang. Regular powdered milk would also work.
- Coconut Cream Powder & Cream of Tartar – This combo tastes similar to the above, except it’s dairy free.
- Buttermilk Powder – This is the classic option and I actually make it most often these days.
- Dried Herbs – I use dried parsley, dried dill, and dried chives. I don’t recommend substituting them because each is key to that classic ranch flavor.
- Spices – Simply garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and black pepper.

How To Use It As A Seasoning, Dip, or Dressing
To use it as a dip:
I usually use about 2-3 tablespoons of ranch seasoning per 1 cup of sour cream (or Greek yogurt) to make a quick dip. If you’re replacing a regular packet, that’s the equivalent amount.
To use it as a seasoning:
My rule of thumb is about 1 tablespoon per pound of meat or veggies for seasoning, but you can use more if you prefer. For specific uses, see my recipe ideas below.
To turn this mix into ranch dressing:
Here’s my quick formula:
- 2 tablespoons ranch seasoning mix
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (or milk of choice)
Stir it together, and you’ve got about 1 3/4 cups of dressing (14 servings at 2 tablespoons each). If dressing is all you’re after, head straight to my ranch dressing recipe instead.

Maya’s Recipe Notes
Serving size: 1 teaspoon
- How to use it: I’ve included ways to turn this into a dip or dressing above, and recipes to use it in below.
- Recipe yield and serving size: This ranch seasoning recipe makes 3/4 cup. The serving size is 1 teaspoon, which is enough for a single portion or about 1/4 pound of meat or veggies. That’s plenty for multiple dips or meals.
- Storage: Store the seasoning in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It will last 1-2 years, but the flavor is best within the first year.

Homemade Ranch Seasoning
Recipe Ideas
I mainly use this ranch seasoning recipe in two ways, either to make ranch dressing ahead or for bold, concentrated flavor without adding extra liquid. Here are my favorites you can try:
- Salads & Dressings – Whisk it into a quick dressing and drizzle it over my Cobb salad, wedge salad, or avocado chicken salad.
- Dips & Appetizers – It works perfectly for making the dressing for my crack dip for parties, or for mixing into a quick veggie dip with sour cream or Greek yogurt.
- Chicken & Casseroles – Add it to my chicken bacon ranch casserole for extra flavor, stir it into slow cooker crack chicken, or sprinkle it over my juicy baked chicken (or really any chicken recipe).
- Quick Flavor Boost for Anything – More than anything, I just sprinkle it over roasted veggies or baked potatoes for an easy flavor upgrade. I also love it in wraps or sandwiches.

1Wow this is delicious! I made it to use with your chicken ranch recipe which was excellent. I have also used as a dip for your zucchini fries as well as dressing for my salads. Will definitely be making this on a regular basis.

1Thank you! I’ve been looking for a good Ranch Mix for YEARS, even before I went keto almost 6 years ago. You’ve nailed it! And I had bought some heavy cream powder last December, not even sure what I would use it for, so I was all set to make it. I had already discovered and loved your Ranch Dressing recipe. But this is so much easier and better! Especially since I only make a quarter of the Ranch Dressing recipe at a time.

1Oh my gosh I LOVE this. I backpack, and dehydrate my own dinners to bring and seasoning on the trail can be challenging. Making a batch of this now since I already have all the ingredients. Going to try on roasted chickpeas too.

0I made the Ranch Dressing today. It turned out very well. I took a lot longer than the posted times but since I’m not really a cook I was surprised it was so easy to make. It is delicious tasting, better than store bought. It went very well with the Cobb Salad I used it on. [ yes the Cobb Salad is from Wholesome Yum too.]
Wholesome Yum D
0James, I love this! Sounds like you made the perfect pairing with the Cobb Salad too! 😊
Mary
0Do you just add water to the Ranch Seasoning recipe, to make Ranch Dressing for salads? Recipe doesn’t say. Or do I add mayonaise and milk? If so, how much???
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Mary, You can find all that info in the post.
karen
0I make this mix without the cream or milk powder of any kind. Much more versatile, and yes I use it a LOT for soups, fish, whatever. Not difficult to ‘sour’ cream.
Jennifer Oliver
0Can I use Instant Nonfat Dry Milk instead of heavy cream powder?
Wholesome Yum D
1Hi Jennifer, Yes, that should work.
Carrie
0Dear Wholesome Yum, I used to love to make Mississippi Pot Roast and it called for a packet of ranch dressing, a packet of Au Ju, a stick of butter, and 8 pepperoncini peppers. Would it be reasonable for carbs to use this seasoning and how much equals one ranch packet? Also what could I use for Au Ju as beef broth doesn’t cut it….
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Carrie, I’m not exactly sure how much is in a packet, but this makes 36 1 tsp servings. I am not sure about the carbs in an Au Ju packet but feel free to use it.
Janet
0Usually there are 5 Tablespoons in a packet.
Jean Ann Guyer
0How much of this will equal 1 packet of Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing Mix
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Jean Ann, I’m not exactly sure how much is in a packet but this makes 36 1 tsp servings.
Nicole Headlee
0Can this ranch seasoning mix be used just like the store bought ranch packets in using it as a dip you mix with sour cream? If so, what would be the amount of ranch mix seasoning to sour cream?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Nicole, Yes you can!
Patricia Bopst
0Is there a recipe for heavy cream powder?
The rest sounds wonderful.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Patricia, Unfortunately I’m not aware of a way to make it yourself, but it’s available here.
Brenda Bean
0How do you make dressing with this? I used buttermilk powder.
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Brenda, You can find those instructions right in the post.
Mary Scott
0Hi Wholesome Yum, As I live in North Queensland Australia, I have a problem obtaining “Heavy Cream Powder” I was wondering could I use Whey Powder (or is this not the same)
I have a a great success with your recipes, I think your site is Great
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Mary, I am sorry, but using whey protein is not the same thing as heavy cream powder. You can use powdered milk if that is available to you, but it will change the nutrition.
Julie Murphy
0What would you use if you can’t find dried cream?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Julie, Heavy Cream Powder is available here. You can also use buttermilk powder, but it will be higher in carbs.
Dannii
0You can’t beat homemade dressing and this looks amazing. So easy too.
Mary
0I had no idea this was so easy to make! Love to get rid of unnecessary sugar!

0Ranch is one of my favorite seasoning mix to buy, and now I can’t make it myself and I know what I’m putting in them. 🙂

0This looks so delicious and perfect for making dips! I can’t wait to use this!
