Get It NowThe Trick I Use To Make the Creamiest Keto Smoothie

I’ve made a lot of smoothies over the years, but most fruity ones don’t work on a keto way of eating because they’re loaded with sugar. I created this keto smoothie to fit my low carb lifestyle at the time, and I still make it often today. I think I always will, no matter how I’m eating. Here’s why:
- Sweet and fruity – Strawberries are one of only a few keto fruits, and this keto smoothie recipe lets them shine. It tastes like a classic strawberry smoothie.
- Thick and creamy texture – My (super simple) secret ingredient makes this smoothie rich, smooth, and thick… it’s avocado! And I promise, you can’t even taste it.
- Very keto friendly – At less than 6 grams net carbs, only 102 calories, and almost 5 grams of fiber per serving, this low carb smoothie is incredibly easy to fit into your macros.
- 4 clean ingredients – I always feel good about sipping this. It’s also dairy-free, gluten-free, and sugar-free. And it only takes a couple minutes to make.
This is probably my favorite of all the keto smoothies I’ve made — and that would be many. Make it with me for a satisfying breakfast or snack!

“This recipe is amazing! Who knew the power of an avocado? And there’s no weird aftertaste from the sweetener! 😛”

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the best ingredients for my keto smoothie recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
Basic Keto Smoothie Ingredients:
- Fruit – I use frozen strawberries to to make the smoothie cold and thick without needing ice cubes. They also happen to be one of the lowest carb fruits on my keto food list. Feel free to use blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries, but you’ll probably need more sweetener. I don’t recommend other fruits, as they’ll be too high in sugar for keto.
- Besti – I use Besti Powdered Monk Fruit Allulose Blend because it dissolves easily and never gets gritty… plus it tastes just like sugar. My Wholesome Yum Keto Simple Syrup works well too, if you want a liquid option. Most other sweeteners (including other brands of monk fruit and stevia) contain erythritol as a filler, which settles at the bottom and can crystallize.
- Avocado – You won’t taste it at all, but it’s my trick for making the smoothie extra thick, creamy, and packed with healthy fats!
- Keto Friendly Milk – Regular milk is too high in carbs, so I use unsweetened almond milk to thin out my keto smoothie. You can also use coconut milk, hemp milk, or even mix heavy cream with water.

Optional Add-Ins:
You can totally keep this keto smoothie recipe simple, but if you want to boost the nutrition or switch up the flavor, here are a few add-ins I like:
- Yogurt – Creates a creamier texture. Be sure your yogurt is unsweetened; I recommend using full-fat Greek yogurt or this keto yogurt recipe.
- Protein – A scoop of unsweetened collagen, whey protein powder, or even a spoonful of nut butter (peanut butter or almond butter) can make this low carb smoothie more satisfying. If you add nut butter or nuts, you might need a splash more milk to thin it out. You might also like my protein smoothie recipe if you want a bigger protein boost.
- Vanilla Extract – If you’re not using vanilla almond milk, a splash of extract adds subtle sweetness and depth.
- Chocolate – A few tablespoons of cocoa powder will cover up the strawberry flavor and makes this creamy smoothie taste like a chocolaty treat.
- Veggies – Try a handful of spinach, kale, or even sliced cucumber. I add a little at a time and taste in between, to ensure I don’t start to taste the greens.
- MCT Oil – This oil helps support ketosis and keeps you full longer (source). I only add up to a tablespoon per serving, otherwise it can upset my stomach.

My Recipe Tips
- To keep your smoothie cold for longer, freeze your glass for 10 minutes. This is especially refreshing on a hot day.
- Don’t have frozen berries? When I don’t want to wait for them to freeze, I just toss in a few ice cubes with the fresh berries to get that frosty texture.
- Use a high-power blender if you can. If yours is less powerful, you might need more milk and won’t be able to get quite as thick of a smoothie. You can also use fresh strawberries if your blender is too weak to handle frozen.
- Adjust Besti to your taste at the end. The amount you need can vary depending on how sweet your berries are and how sweet you want your keto smoothie.
- The color of this smoothie depends your berries and avocado. This sounds obvious, but I’ve had some people ask me why their keto smoothie isn’t as bright pink as mine. I get the color shown here when my berries are super red and my avocado is more yellow-ish. Paler red strawberries or a greener avocado makes the smoothie less bright, but still just as delicious!
- Want it a little fancy? Garnish your drink with a fresh strawberry, a swirl of sugar-free whipped cream, and a colorful straw (I like these fun ones that are also biodegradable).

- Tips: Check out my recipe tips above to help you with get the best texture, color, and sweetness.
- Storage: This keto smoothie looks best fresh, since it gets thinner when the berries thaw and the avocado starts to make it yellow-ish with time. However, you can store it for up to 1-2 days in the fridge if you need to. Blend again before enjoying.

0Can you use fresh
strawberries in the smoothie?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Jeannine, YES! Fresh strawberries work great!
Jamie
0Hi,
my husband and teenage son have both been on Keto for about 2 months now and I’m having a hard time getting enough fat in my son’s daily intake because he’s so picky and rarely eats breakfast. He won’t eat eggs unless in crepes or hidden nor will he eat avocado. He suggested trying avocado in a smoothie so I’m hoping this one will be the one! I have been reading that MCT oil & powder are ways to add extra fat and energy to smoothies and other foods. Do you recommend either of those as additions to this smoothie and how much? If you have any other suggestions on recipes these can be added to that would be great. Also, any suggestions on other ways to increase daily fat would be very helpful! Thanks for all the work you have done to make this journey so much easier for us!
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Jamie, Remember that fat is your lever, you only need to eat enough to keep yourself satiated. So if your son is not hungry, then there isn’t any need to push more fats. Skipping breakfast is also fine if that is his preference. It’s a great way to work in Intermittent Fasting. MCT oil is a great tool to add fats if they are needed. If you are just getting started with using MCT oil, start with 1/2 teaspoon and slowly increase. Adding too much too quickly can cause stomach upset. I hope this helps!
Angela
0This is my new go-to smoothie! It’s incredibly rich, creamy, filling, and delicious. Did I mention easy to make? I’d never tried avocado in a smoothie before, and TBH I was a tad nervous. I needn’t have worried—it’s easily the best smoothie I’ve ever tasted. Hubby loved it too!
Sama
0Hi!! Love the smoothie but I wasn’t sure if I was reading the recipe correctly. Does it call for 1 pound of strawberries? Thanks so much for the help!
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Sama, That is correct. It sounds like a lot of strawberries, but keep in mind this recipe makes 5 servings. Enjoy!
pat
0Since this is my first try at a smoothie, how can I make just ONE serving and what are the amount of the ingredients? I tried to change the servings to 1 OR 2, on the recipe, but it didn’t adjust the quantities.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Pat, The quantities should change when you change the servings on the recipe card. It’s working for me when I try it. If it’s not working for you, please email us here so that we can try to help troubleshoot. Otherwise you could also manually divide each ingredient by the number of servings in the original recipe, but it really should work without you having to do that.
bren037
0This recipe sounds amazing. I am excited to try it. Do you know if it can be made ahead? Since quarantine started, I have been eating my lunch in my car at work and prefer something cold over heating something up then taking it to my car. I like the idea of something portable.
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Bren037, If you are blending your smoothie in the morning, then it’s probably fine. You may want to add a squeeze of lemon or lime to your drink to keep the avocado from oxidizing.
Tracey Dooling
0Loved it. I was so surprised my husband went along with “ice-cream” for dinner and loved it! He’s not a smoothie person. We do split a whole recipe and use 1/4 cup of cream and 3/4 cup water instead of almond milk. Made it in our nutribullet with frozen sour cherries, or blackberry and black raspberry mix. Blueberries next. Also used Swerve powdered for sweetener. I hadn’t enjoyed much made with the swerve before this. Excellent and I lost a few lbs the first week even though I’ve been trying to do keto for 2yrs. It was the sweeteners doing me in, had to have ice cream and chocolate (too often) with sugar.
Princess
0Didn’t have strawberries so I used fresh blueberries instead and stevia for sweetener. Turned out so good! Thanks for the recipe!
Corena Sutton
0This is my first time trying keto and I am so glad that I found this keto smoothie recipe. It was delicious!!! Thank you so much!
Cassandra
0This is my first time to try this and my family and I love it.
Louise Potter
0Excellent smoothie! For the sweetener I used a monkfruit/erythritol combo and it worked well.
I used frozen avocado chunks, so it would be helpful to have the weight of this ingredient.
Thanks for the recipe!!
Kat
0So easy and so good! I used stevia as my sweetener and it worked great – none of that frequent stevia after taste with the avocado and strawberries.
Christie
0Can you save the other portion for the next day in fridge?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Christie, Yes! Enjoy.
Mal Edie
0What other keto sweetener can ya use if you don’t have powdered Allulose?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Mal, Powdered erythritol or a powdered sweetener blend will work. Keep in mind that if you use a sweetener blend, you will need less sweetener than is called for in the recipe.
Susana
0I did this today in the morning for my breakfast fruit smoothie and it was very refreshing I loved it! My sweetheart also loved the taste! Will do this one again!
Valerie
0I am pleasantly surprised. I will definitely make again
Ellen F.
0I just want to say thank you for your recipes. I’ve been on the keto diet for the last 2 months and I’ve lost 15 pounds. The keto diet makes me feel better.
Rosalyn Thompson
0Is there any way to save leftovers?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Rosalyn, press plastic wrap on to the top of your smoothie. This should prevent the smoothie from being exposed to air and discoloring. It can be stored in the fridge until you are ready to drink it.
Carolyn
0I have just started Keto and have trouble finding things for breakfast due to an egg allergy..I loved loved loved this smoothie….The flavour is devine..Thanks
Su Rogers
0Hi there – I find that I don’t need any sweeteners of any kind when making smoothies – the berries are sweet enough. Just a wee comment. I find any artificial sweeteners to be too cloying and ruin the taste of the smoothie for myself. Great recipes!
Malorie Edie
0Just made the strawberry avocado keto smoothie and I added unsweetened vanilla almond milk & also added powdered monk fruit sweetener to it. Omg, it tastes so good, yum. I would def make that again.
tammy funk
0omg I want to make this. I’m watching carbs and sugar and sodium is this a go. I get a sweet tooth.
Christine
0Yummy! I hate avocados but decided to give this a try. Strawberries were not overly ripe so I did add some truvia sweetener. I added some ice cubes to blender and then added a few when done. Icy cold and refreshing. Thanks for this awsome, simple and delicious recipe.
Lynda
0Can this be made and kept for three or four hours before eating? I need to make a smoothie or something soft for my husband to take with him to eat after a dental procedure.
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Lynda, Yes that should be fine. Put it in a cup that will keep it nice and cold like a double walled stainless steel mug.
Lorrie MN Keating
0‘1 large avocado’. Large, medium, small are arbitrary measurements. Can you please provide the amount by either a standard measurement or by weight (preferred)?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Lorrie, I understand the frustration with this type of measurement. Avocados are unique because the pit can vary greatly in size, so it’s a gamble to know how much exactly you are buying when picking avocados. With that said, please know that this recipe is very forgiving and will turn out well with any amount of avocado that you can get from a single fruit. If you are more concerned about macros, then I suggest working backwards and only adding in (by weight) the amount of avocado you are needing to hit your macro goals.
Tina
0The video shows 2 avocados but the recipe shows only one. Which is it?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Tina, The written recipe is correct, just one avocado. Enjoy!
Lynnda
0hello — 2nd week of keto. so far so good. not much cravings. I was wondering if i can use unsweetened coconut milk in place of almond milk? also, I live in Ecuador — we have straweberries, but I love mora / black raspberries.. very tart. Are they ok to use? thanks . Lynnda
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Lynnda, Unsweetened coconut milk is a fine substitution for almond milk. Black raspberries appear to be about the same sweetness as red raspberries, so I think they are probably fine in moderation.
Tammy Harrison
0I haven’t tried this yet. I just want to make a single serving using frozen fruit. Do you have recipes that are for just a single serving and using frozen fruit? Can’t always get fresh. I’m on a low carb keto diet and prefer smoothies that are light.
Wholesome Yum A
0Hi Tammy, above the video, there is a space to edit the serving size and automatically recalculate the ingredients. This one also works for fresh or frozen fruit!
Kelley Davis
0I used the half heavy cream and mixed brrries. It was delicious. Like a really creamy soft serve ice cream. I will definitly make it again.
Mac
0Will this keep overnight in the fridge? Running a blender at 5am = grumpy family members 🙂
Wholesome Yum
0Hi Mac, it’s not ideal but I think that would work. 🙂
Johnna
0YummOH! Only thing I adjusted was adding an additional 1/2 cup almond milk as mine was SUPER thick. Family loved and had no idea there was avocado in it!
Yvonne
0How do I divide ingredients for a SINGLE Smoothies at a time?
Wholesome Yum L
0Hi Yvonne, you can change the serving size on the recipe card to 1 and it will give you the measurements you need to make one smoothie at a time.
Monique Botha
0YUM!! Added some Kite Hill unsweetened almond milk yogurt for creaminess, the other half of the avocado, a dash of heavy cream and a bit of Choc Zero maple syrup.
Ryan
0Hi I’m brand new to Keto and was looking for some smoothie recipes to sub in for lunch or breakfast and this looks awesome!! I was just wondering how much is .2 of an avocado?? Thank you!!!
Wholesome Yum L
0Hi Ryan, 0.2 of an avocado would be 1/5 of the avocado. I hope you love this recipe.
Dani
0Can someone tell me what 0.4 of an avocado is? My brain is not working.
Wholesome Yum L
0Hi Dani! 0.4 of an avocado would be two-fifths of an avocado. However, the recipe calls for 1 large avocado! 😉
Kari
0She asked what .4 of an avocado is because when you adjust the serving size (as you recommended), that’s what comes up for two servings… .4 avocado. So while you wrote the recipe as one whole avocado, people are making smaller portions. Her question was valid!
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Kari, Fruits and vegetables don’t all grow to uniform sizes and shapes, so it can be difficult to give exact amounts when it comes to recipes. If you are scaling the recipe to serve 2, then .4 of a large avocado would be a bit less than 1/2 of the avocado. You can approximate this by scooping out the round of the avocado half and reserve the top of the fruit to use for something else. I hope this helps!
Samantha
0Yum! Trying to sneak in avocado for the kids and this was a hit!
Changed a couple of things because that’s what I had. Used frozen raspberries. And Skinny Syrup raspberry flavor instead of sweetener. Plus 1/2T cocoa powder.
Glenn myatt
0Why so many (7) net carbs per cup ?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Glenn, The carbs come mostly from the strawberries.
Dee
0Simply good
Jessa
0This was amazing! Made it for the whole family and they all loved it. I used the half almond milk and half heavy cream. It’s so creamy and delicious. I want to try other flavors, like raspberry or blackberries!
Do you think this recipe would work well for a chocolate peanut butter smoothie? I’m thinking to sub the strawberries for cocoa powder and peanut butter and then make ice cubes out of the milk mixture to get that frozen smoothie texture.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Jessa, I’m so glad you liked this. I have a chocolate peanut butter smoothie recipe here! If you want it to be a more frozen texture, you can just add ice cubes to that.
Jessa
0Oh my gosh, that looks so delicious! THANK YOU!
Fran
0I cannot believe how good this taste. I just started the Keto and I drink this on my way to work (1 hour commute). It is very filling and satisfying. I can’t get behind the almond milk yet. I am a dairy girl, love my full dairy. So I swapped out the almond milk for water, ice, and heavy cream. I don’t add the sweetener to the whole batch I wait and sweeten my single serving. YUMMY
Sandi M
0Did the mix of coconut cream and almond milk. This is amazing!
Candice Stansell
0I love making this its so easy and good; I used coconut sugar for mine.
Veronica
0Why did you use 1 1b of strawberries?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Veronica, The strawberries provide flavor and sweetness.
Bryan Pender
0Amazing recipe, added vanilla protein powder, tasted like ice cream.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Thank you so much, Bryan! Love that idea!
Ellen
0Thanks so easy and tasted great! I’ve been missing fruit on my Keto diet! Also did as suggested swapped little more heavy cream for some almond milk. I didn’t think I’d need to add sugar as I don’t have a sweet tooth , but did in end add a very small amount of Swerve .
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I am so happy you liked it, Eleen! Have a great day!
Leah
0This smoothie was perfect for me as a beginner on keto! I’ve never even tried avocado in a smoothie before and it was lovely. Thanks!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Thank you so much, Leah! So glad you liked it!
Mark
0What kind of avocado exactly? I prefer Hass or Mexicola but that changes the volume from large Floridian, Californian, or Hass.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Mark, I used a Hass avocado but you can use any kind you like.
Andrea
0Can I add a scoop of protein powder to this? Do you think chocolate or vanilla would taste better?
Bryan Pender
0I just used vanilla in mine and was amazing, definately more milk !!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Andrea, Yes, definitely! It would make it thicker, so you might need to add more milk. I think vanilla would be better with the strawberries but you could do either.
Mary Frisch
0This smoothie was fantastic. I added a little bit of plain Greek yogurt and I used blueberries. I also used one cup of unsweetened almond milk and 1/2 a cup of heavy whipping cream. It turned out so thick and creamy. Oh yeah, I also added 6 ice cubes.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I am so happy you liked the smoothie, Mary!
Matt
0Do you actually only drink 1 cup every morning?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Matt, I don’t have this every morning, but when I do, I do have one cup.
Kim
0I made this as written, and it’s great! My daughters requested a taste and love it, too. My oldest said that we should try using it to make popsicles… and maybe I will next time, if there’s any left!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I am so happy you and your daughters liked the smoothie, Kim! Please come back again!
Julie
0This milkshake is amazing!!! I use no sweetener, coconut milk, and a dab of heavy whipping cream. My husband can taste the avocado and he doesn’t like it, but I barely even notice it. I made some last night and had half this morning and it still tasted great. Thank you so much!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Julie! I am so happy you liked the smoothie! Thanks for stopping by!
