With my homemade ranch dressing recipe being so popular, people have been asking me for more restaurant-quality dressings, and this homemade blue cheese dressing recipe was next on my list to make. It tastes better than the kind in the bottle, and it’s made with simple, clean ingredients you can find in any grocery store.
I’m excited to show you how to make blue cheese dressing (hint: it takes 5 minutes!), but be warned: You’ll want to put it on just about everything! It’s the best blue cheese dressing I’ve ever tried.
Why This Is The Best Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe
- Bold, tangy flavors
- Thick and creamy with blue cheese chunks
- 5 simple ingredients (plus salt and pepper)
- Just 5 minutes to make
- Versatile with so many ways to use it – not just for salad!

Ingredients & Substitutions
This section explains how to choose the best blue cheese dressing ingredients, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card below.
- Mayonnaise – I like to use my own homemade mayo when I have time, but store-bought works too. Greek yogurt will also work as a substitute, but the flavor will be different.
- Sour Cream – Gives the dressing a tangy flavor. If you opt for Greek yogurt above, you can substitute the sour cream with that as well.
- Crumbled Blue Cheese – Of course you need blue cheese for a blue cheese salad dressing recipe! Sometimes this is called bleu cheese at the store, which is the same thing with the French spelling. The crumbles provide texture, as well as a powerful intense flavor. You can also use Roquefort, Gorgonzola, Stilton, and Cambazola.
- Lemon Juice – I used bottled lemon juice for convenience, because you only need a teaspoon. But you could get juice from freshly squeezed lemons as well.
- Almond Milk – The milk thins out the dressing. I used store-bought unsweetened almond milk, but you could make almond milk at home, or use any milk you prefer (dairy milk, coconut milk, heavy cream, half and half, etc). Buttermilk would also work if you like.
- Sea Salt & Black Pepper

How To Make Blue Cheese Dressing
Simply whisk together the ingredients in a medium bowl or mason jar: Mayonnaise, sour cream, blue cheese crumbles, lemon juice, almond milk, sea salt, and black pepper.

TIP: Use a spoon to press the blue cheese pieces against the sides of the bowl or jar.
This helps the blue cheese flavor incorporate into the dressing.

Storage Instructions
Store homemade blue cheese dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.
Freezing is not recommended, as it will separate and no longer be creamy when you thaw it.
If you won’t be able to eat all of it within a week, just cut the recipe in half. Since it takes just 5 minutes to make, it’s easy to whip up another batch when you need it.
Ways To Use Blue Cheese Dressing
Just like my poppyseed dressing, you can add this easy blue cheese dressing to so many dishes — or just your favorite healthy salad recipes! Here are some of our favorite ways to use it:
- Salads – Elevate your grilled chicken salad with the rich and tangy flavors of this dressing. It’s also the perfect pairing for classic options like a wedge salad or cobb salad.
- Buffalo Flavors – I always serve buffalo wings with blue cheese (and ranch), but it’s just as flavorful with buffalo cauliflower bites or juicy baked buffalo chicken.
- Veggie Dip – This recipe for blue cheese dressing is the perfect dip for crisp and crunchy vegetables, like cucumbers, bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or cherry tomatoes.
- Burgers – Add a little zing to your next burger — and include slices of baked bacon for over-the-top flavor.
- Steaks – Add tang and creaminess to a grilled steak, thick and juicy New York strip, or quick and easy air fryer filet mignon.
- Soup – Instead of using sour cream, add a dollop to my favorite chili recipe, a savory broccoli cheddar soup, or creamy celery root soup.
- Potatoes – Try mixing it into mashed potatoes (or cauliflower mash), drizzling it on top of an air fryer baked potato, or toss with roasted potatoes for a rich and creamy side dish.

0I am the biggest fan of your dressing recipes! They are a win every single time. I generally have at least two sitting the fridge. I’ve been making your blue cheese for weeks and figured I should let everyone else know how great it is! Also try the ranch! to die for
Ali

Gina

Patricia Surratt
0Very yummy! I use HWC in mine. I have subbed white wine vinegar when no lemon or lime is handy. Delicious every time.
Cynthia
0Excellent! I made this recipe today. Blue cheese is my husband’s favorite dressing. It was delicious and easy. He suggested that I put a little less blue cheese in it but instead, I will adjust by adding a little more of the other ingredients since I had to buy a 4-ounce package of the cheese. This will be a go-to recipe at our house. We eat salad daily. Thank you again, Maya
Jess
0I’ve been making this for about 2 years now. It is the tastiest and easiest to make blue cheese dressing evah! So much better than any pre-made brands and no nasty soy!!!! I keep coming back to make this it time after time.
Melissa
0Very tasty, fresh recipe, perfect compliment to my buffalo wings
Helen
0I think it’s great! I need to cut it in half, however, so I can use it in a timely way.
Kristine
0This is great! The key is to use a good strong blue cheese to get that pungent flavor to shine over the mayo and sour cream. I used heavy cream instead of almond milk and only a little as I wanted a dip consistency for wings and celery. So much better than any bottled dressing!
Lita
0I’ve made this recipe three times now. I did adapt it slightly, due to the first attempt being too strong in mayo flavor for my palate. I added 1 cup of sour cream and 1/2 cup of mayo instead. I also added heavy whipping cream instead of almond milk (just because we didn’t have any). The third time was perfection and was an absolute winner with our keto buffalo chicken wings on NYE. I love this website and I’ve also purchased two fab Wholesome Yum books. Thank you!
Susan
0Good recipe! I think it has too much mayonnaise for my taste. Have you tried 1/2 cup each of Mayonnaise and Greek Yogurt? I was hesitant about making it but after I did – it is so much better that most store-bought dressings. More dressing recipes please! A Vinaigrette with Blue Cheese would be great. . .
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Susan, I have not tried that but let me know your results if you do.
Julia
0Being new to Keto & despairing at the sugar in shop bought dressings I was pleased to find this recipe. I found it a little too creamy for my taste, maybe because I’m British & our dressings tend to be vinaigrette based, so I added a teaspoon of white wine vinegar & voila, perfect. Oh, & more blue cheese, it’s my favourite.
Greg
0One of my favorites from Maya. Our favorite dressing and the only change I make is using half the salt
Cindy
0How much is a 16 of the recipe in servings. It’s delicious.
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Cindy, Each serving is 2 tbsp.
Jenna
0How long does it keep for in a mason jar?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Jenna, you can store this blue cheese salad dressing recipe in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last 5-7 days in the fridge.
Patricia Surratt
0Wonderful recipe. I make mine with heavy whipping cream. So much better and healthier than anything you can get from the store.
Lu
0Could you use Feta cheese?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Lu, I have not tried this using feta cheese. I don’t believe it would have the same flavor as blue cheese but feel free to try it out and let me know what you think!
John
0I can’t see on the phone the amount of each ingredient that u would need to make this recipe.
Thanks.
Wholesome Yum D

0It’s so hard to find keto approved salad dressings with out soy, vegetable, and canola oil and sugar! They also often contain preservatives and questionable ingredients, yuck! I love this easy salad dressing recipe from Maya that solves the problem, saves money on expensive salad dressings and boy does this make eating big salad for lunch easy!! I was intimidated in the past making salad dressing, now I see it’s so easy! I used the primal mayo, some greens and cucumber from my local farm (Covey rise farms), butcher box flank steak, red onions, and this delicious salad dressing for delicious steak salad. Maya, feel free to make some more salad dressing recipes! So far I have made “honey” mustard from your cookbook, tzatziki and the big mac salad dressing and now this one. They are all awesome!

Dee Burr
0I followed the recipe as is. It turned out very good. This was tasting it before it had time to sit and blend. I’m very happy with the recipe. Blue cheese is my favorite dressing.’
I used Duke’s mayonaise which has no sugar in it.
Kimber
0FABULOUS, I dream about this dressing
Stacey
0I love all things blue cheese & this did not fail me. It was simple to make and beat restaurant dressing. I will never have store bought dressing again.
Anna
0Hi! I made the blue cheese dressing and it’s so delicious but the problem is that the next day turned liquid, like milk with blue cheese why? ☹️
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Anna, Did you keep your jar of dressing tightly sealed? If it’s left open or exposed to air, it can change the texture of the dressing.
Amy
0Probably because it’s made with better ingredients rather than the processed stuff that stays creamed. Think of real peanut butter verses the crappy kind… the liquids and solids just separate, especially in cold conditions.
Just give it a stir and you’re good to go! 🙂
Sara
0This is so rich and creamy; perfect with buffalo wings! Yum!!
Emily Liao
0I love blue cheese dressing, so I’m glad to have discovered a keto version!
Amy

Claudia
0I’m not a huge fan of blue cheese but I tried this dressing at home to surprise my husband and we both loved it!
Anita
0I’m starting to like blue cheese, and I didn’t used to like them LOL. For blue cheese newbies, starting with blue cheese dressing is really not a bad idea. You will end up loving blue cheese in no time at all. 🙂
