It keeps me full and energized all morning, it’s faster than a coffee shop run, and it tastes amazing. What Is Bulletproof Coffee?
Bulletproof coffee, sometimes called bullet coffee for short, is a popular keto coffee made by blending butter (or ghee) with coconut oil or MCT oil. It’s a rich, frothy drink that tastes like a latte! Along with chaffles, it’s become a trend in the keto diet community, but I say you don’t have to be keto to enjoy its benefits!
The Bulletproof brand started this trend, but the term has become a go-to for any butter coffee. My recipe isn’t affiliated with the brand, but I do love using their coffee beans for it!
Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the best ingredients for my keto coffee recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
Main Ingredients:
- Coffee – Use any brewed coffee you like! I’ve made bulletproof coffee using regular coffee (my fave coffee beans are these and these), decaf coffee when I don’t want caffeine, heated cold brew, and even this instant coffee which is unbelievably delicious. Sometimes I select Americano on my coffee maker (it was a splurge, but I’ve had it for years and it’s paid for itself with fewer coffee shop runs!).
- Butter – Butter in coffee may sound strange, but when blended, it emulsifies for an amazing latte-like vibe! I recommend this grass-fed butter for the best nutrition and health benefits. It has more omega-3s than conventional varieties (source). You can also use the same amount of ghee or coconut oil if you’re sensitive to lactose or dairy, but your coffee will be less creamy.
- MCT Oil – MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides. These fatty acids, found in coconut oil, aid in weight loss and fat burning (source) — but there are several types and some are better than others. C8 is absorbed faster for a burst of energy and produces more ketones, while C10 gives more sustained energy, so I like this blend of both. I don’t recommend C6 (can cause stomach upset) or C12 (harder to absorb). Coconut oil works as a substitute for texture, but doesn’t pack the same punch as refined MCT oil in coffee.
Optional Add-Ins & Variations:
- Milk – I don’t recommend regular dairy milk, since the lactose is sugar and will negate the benefits of this drink. I like to use unsweetened almond milk (regular or vanilla) in this recipe to lighten up the fat a bit, but any milk alternative or even sugar-free coffee creamer works, too.
- Collagen Protein – Add a scoop if you want extra protein for your macros. I like this brand. You might also like my high protein coffee recipe if you’re on a protein kick.
- Flavored Coffee Syrup – Add a splash of my sugar-free coffee syrup (it comes in hazelnut or vanilla). This is what I add most often!
- Plain Sweetener – When I want sweetness without flavor, my sugar-free simple syrup is my go-to. You can also add Besti Powdered Monk Fruit Allulose Blend, which dissolves effortlessly and has no aftertaste — unlike virtually every other sugar substitute.
- Mocha – Blend in up to 1-2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, and sweetener if you like.
- Spices – Add a teaspoon of cinnamon or turmeric, or a dash of cayenne. For a fall vibe, swap the heavy cream for grass-fed butter in my sugar-free pumpkin spice latte.
- Toppings – Give it a coffee shop feel with a dollop of sugar-free whipped cream, and a drizzle of sugar-free caramel or sugar-free chocolate syrup.

3 Ways To Make Coffee With Butter
I have step-by-step photos here to help you visualize the recipe. For full instructions with amounts and temperatures, see the recipe card.
As you can imagine, you can’t just stir some butter into coffee and call it a day. It will be oily, and honestly, pretty bad that way. 😅 Instead, you have to make it frothy to emulsify it, which will make it taste like a latte! I’ve found 3 ways to do this:
- Blender – Just toss all the ingredients into a blender and blend until frothy. This is my favorite way to make it, pictured below. There’s less chance of a mess, and I can whip up a double batch for my husband and me.
- Milk Frother – Add everything to a mug or tall glass, then grab a milk frother (or immersion blender) and blend until frothy. Just make sure to leave enough space at the top to avoid spilling!
- Self-Stirring Mug – I just got this self-stirring mug and it’s the easiest way to make bulletproof coffee without extra tools to wash! Just add your ingredients, press a button, and it blends perfectly.

TIP: Drink your bullet coffee right away!
It will lose its frothy texture with time and can form a film on top. It tastes best fresh! But if you need to, you can blend it again later to bring it back together.
Common Questions
- Why do people put butter in their coffee? I put butter in coffee to make it rich, creamy, and frothy—like a latte without the carbs. It also adds healthy fats that can you full and energized. I love the mental clarity I get from it, too.
- Is coffee keto friendly? Yes, coffee is keto! It’s naturally carb-free—and so is my butter coffee recipe. Just skip the sugar and processed, high-carb creamers.
- Does bulletproof coffee break a fast? It depends on your approach. Technically, anything with calories does break a fast, but I find that I still get intermittent fasting benefits—like steady blood sugar and reduced hunger—even if I drink this keto coffee in the morning. But if you’re fasting, it’s best to skip the optional add-ins.
- Can you make it iced instead of hot? Yes, you can. Make it hot and just pour over ice. But drink it fast because it will separate in a few minutes! You could also make my keto iced coffee instead.
- Can you make it with tea? Yes! Sometimes I use brewed tea instead of brewed coffee. It’s delicious in its own way, with less caffeine.
- Can you make it ahead? Sort of. Bulletproof coffee will separate and/or form a film on top as it cools, which isn’t very appetizing. But I have a shortcut to meal prep on the recipe card below.

More Keto Breakfast Recipes
Looking for more low carb ways to start your day? I have so many low carb breakfast recipes you can try:
- Eggs & Bacon – Coddled eggs are my personal favorite, but baked eggs or egg muffins are awesome for meal prep. Cook up your bacon in the oven for a big batch, or you can air fry bacon or microwave bacon for smaller, quicker options.
- Low Carb Bagels – I always have a batch in my freezer! Toast them up and top with cream cheese and lox, mashed avocado with everything seasoning, or an egg and bacon for a keto breakfast sandwich.
- Sweets – Try my keto pancakes, low carb waffles, or French toast for a sweet treat. I also love low carb coffee cake or a keto donut together with bulletproof coffee.
- Low Carb “Oats” – Warm up with a bowl of keto oatmeal, or grab some low carb granola.

Maya’s Recipe Notes
Serving size: 1 bulletproof coffee
- Add-ins & flavors: There are lots of ways to change up this drink. See my variations above!
- Meal prep: Butter coffee is not ideal for making ahead because it will separate or form a film on top, but you can batch prep the add-ins. Mix softened butter and coconut oil together, then freeze in an ice cube tray. Pop a cube or two in your blender before adding hot coffee and mixing. Keep in mind, pure MCT oil does not freeze well, so this method works better with coconut oil instead, which still has some MCTs.
- Have questions? See my FAQ above first, and if you don’t see the answer, leave me a comment below.
- Note on nutrition info: The optional add-ins are not included. It will vary depending on what you add.

0Hi Edna, I have some hardcover cookbooks here. Many of my other products are digital, but you can send them off to a local printer make a printed copy for yourself. I hope this helps!
Sandra
0Wow, your keto butter coffee recipe is wonderful — the only difference I could find to the official bulletproof recipe is the almond milk, and it makes it 100% better, no question. It simply doesn’t froth without the almond milk, plus in my opinion it tastes better and doesn’t seem oily. For what it’s worth, I appreciate the service you provide for free, but it would be hard to go on frequently; for some reason, the website in general is not easy on the eyes. black and pink and lots of distractions. I think it’s the day-glo links; I’d be much more likely to read the content if they were just a little more subtle. All that said, I don’t have a website and maybe for marketing reasons you decided this was a good way to go; you’ve got interesting stuff here, but for me there’s just too much per square inch. Thanks again for the great recipe.

0I love butter coffee! I bought some MCT oil powder to try instead of the coconut oil I’ve been using. I found it a bit gritty and also I missed the coconut flavour and creaminess. I would like to try some different MCT oil! I will look around for flavoured. I also add vanilla and if I want a treat, I do like to add some Erythritol and monk fruit extract (which I get at Bulk Barn, in Canada). Sometimes I make it in my hot chocolate milk frother because it also heats- then I don’t have to worry about it cooling down.
Isabel
0First time trying it. Needs some sweetness, however not too bad. I did add a smidge of vanilla extract for some flavor.
Mary Galla
0I like my coffee either very hot or iced. It seems like adding all that almond milk would cool the coffee down too much. Do you warm the almond mild first? I usually put a small splash ( 1 T) into 12 oz hot coffee and that is ok. Any more cools it down to much. Thoughts?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Mary, Using room temp or cold almond milk does cool off the coffee. If you are wanting to keep it at a higher drinking temperature, then feel free to warm your almond milk before using it.
Deanna
0I’ve been eyeing this recipe since I started keto 2 months ago. I was super skeptical about butter in coffee… it still sounds strange but today I took the plunge and… I love it!!! I’ll buy an immersion blender or frother for easier cleanup. Thank you!
Jacqueline
0Instead of butter or ghee, could I use coconut manna?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Jacqueline, Yes, but it’s not quite the same effect as coconut or MCT oil.
Melisa B
0Would you add both bulletproof brain octain oil and coconut oil into the blender with coffee and collagen powder? Only because I am lactose intolerant and the only butter I usually use is Smart Balance original butter (not sure if that is keto). Or if I am using bulletproof brain octain oil, would I leave out the coconut oil? Thanks!
Wendy
0If you are only lactose intolerant and not milk protein intolerant, you should be able to have butter. The lactose is removed with the buttermilk in the butter making process. My husband has been lactose intolerant most of his life and tolerates butter, cultured yogurt, and cultured buttermilk. If you’re still having a problem, then it may be a milk protein intolerance.
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Melisa, There is no need to use both forms. Feel free to use just one for your bulletproof coffee. Enjoy!
Dinka Barbic
0Great recipe, thanks for sharing! One tip on the frothing – I use an immersion blender in a tall glass (the one I got with the blender) which creates as much foam as a regular blender but without the clean-up
Jeanie Wallace
0This looks good but I like my coffee sweeeeeet. Love Cuban coffee! Can I add Swerve or a sweetner like that?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Jeanie, You can definitely add a sweetener. I don’t recommend Swerve because it doesn’t dissolve very well and tends to settle at the bottom. Try my keto coffee syrups instead (available in vanilla or hazelnut), or if you prefer a granulated sweetener, Besti monk fruit allulose blend works best.

0I do intermittent fasting and don’t eat from 8pm until 12pm the next day. Will this interfere with that?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Meghan, Technically this will break your fast, but I find I still feel fasting benefits if this is the only thing I have even during my fasting window.
Rita
0I’m new here and I would like to know what is in MCT Oil?
Nancy Russell
0MCT oil also helps to make you feel fuller, longer:)
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Rita, MCT oil is made up of medium-chain triglycerides from coconut oil. Although not a necessary part of the keto diet, it provides a dose of healthy fats to your diet.
Belinda Smith
0I make bullet coffee all most every morning, sometimes I use cream or 1/2 &1/2 (1/4 cup) of SF saltedcaramel skinny syrup , delish☕delish.
Brandi
0Hi. I love your information but the web page is so full of pop ups and stuff coming at you and loading that it’s sooo hard to scroll and read without having to move stuff out of my reading. Very frustrating.
Coffee is amazing though!!

Mahalia
0Was lovely, but only used 1/4 cup of unsweetened almond milk and vanilla protein powder instead of collagen.
Anu
0Thanks for the recipe! Just a note, ghee is not dairy free (clarified butter), but it is lactose free.
Marie
0This is delicious. Thank you.
Lori
0Don’t forget you can use Heavy Whipping Cream instead of Almond Milk which some don’t care for- or are allergic to- its is only 1-3 carbs depending on the brand. I have been making this for 2.5 yrs now- its filling and delicious- tastes like dessert. Make sure you put the collagen in cup first then coffee then froth- then add butter froth, then oil froth, then cream- froth it all up into a latte- YUMI love all your recipes Wholesome Yum!!
Tamsin Pape
0Hi I have always had a pretty high keto diet but got more strict with it last year as well as having a detox and managed to shift that extra stone of toxic belly fat which is great as my IBS of 15 years has cleared! I love the look of these bulletproof coffees as I don’t have breakfast anymore I usually fast but I will have a drink of some sort. Usually, an herbal tea or a b vitamin natural drink or a brunch-time shake. I am missing that morning coffee though.. saying that I do not drink any caffeine as it really doesn’t agree with me. I do have organic decaf coffee I have now and again. Can I make a bulletproof coffee using decaf instant coffee or does it have to be coffee beans to make this? I don’t have a coffee machine. Will it taste the same ♀️
Squeaky
0I make this with instant decaf espresso all the time! Sometimes I want a coffee and a snack in the afternoon, and it’s so quick to just boil water, pour in my measuring cup with the ingredients, and whip it up with my stick blender, rather than brewing one cup of decaf. I know your original comment is old but maybe someone else will read this. 🙂
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Tamsin, Yes! Decaf instant coffee will work great with this bulletproof coffee recipe. Enjoy!
Christina
0but watch the FAT content.. Count your own macros from each ingredient because these nutritional values underneath the recipe MUST be wrong. that doesn’t even cover the value of a teaspoon of butter let alone all of those ingredients. :/
One of these coffees, according to the ingredients I have in front of me..
– Coffee black: 0 and 0 calories
– Butter, 1 tsp (13gr) : 10.7 fat, 97 calories
– Raw Virgin Organic Coconut Oil, 1 tsp 13.5 fat, 120 calories
– Almond milk (because it would be weird having this without milk) let’s say 50ml in your coffee: there’s another 12 calories
So, I just don’t understand how people fit this bulletproof coffee in esp when they put full tablespoons of these in or put whipped cream on top too?!?! This cut down version I just wrote is already 25gr fat and 220 calories! For one coffee that better be filling enough to last you half the day without eating.. :/ :/ Ps – with whipped cream it’d be 1.5 time that too.. Tell me how you guys have this each day? Do you eat like birds? I’d LOVE to have this in a day but not at the expense of an entire meal.. I’m soo curious to know
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Christina, This is a high-fat recipe and that’s the point. I do wonder if you are reading the labels as 1 teaspoon when they actually say 1 tablespoon? 13 grams of butter is much closer to a tablespoon than a teaspoon. Bulletproof coffee is very filling, so yes, it keeps me full all morning.
Emily Webb
0I started drinking this coffee 2 weeks ago when I saw this recipe. I follow it exactly. I even went through the link to buy this MCT oil from Amazon. I love it! it is very frothy and delicious. I am very saddened however, because I can no longer drink it. I had my cholesterol checked today and it was high. I have never had high cholesterol before and the one suggestion the provider stated was to stop the bulletproof coffee. Any suggestions?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Emily, I’m glad you like the recipe. I don’t give medical advice, but if you’re following keto, be sure your doctor is familiar with it as the advice is sometimes different than conventional diets. There is a plethora of reasons for high cholesterol, and ways to interpret the numbers. I also highly recommend this book which helps dispel some cholesterol myths. But as always, no book or website is a substitute for a doctor’s advice.
