On a low carb lifestyle, you may already be accustomed to ordering keto at Starbucks or using keto coffee creamer with your brew… but if you haven’t tried bulletproof coffee yet, you’re in for a treat! This keto coffee recipe is so delicious and satisfying that it might replace all the others. I’ll explain why to put butter in coffee, plus how to make it in minutes (with or without a blender), delicious flavor variations, and key benefits behind this rich and frothy drink.
What Is Bulletproof Coffee?
Bulletproof coffee is keto coffee made with either butter or ghee, and either coconut oil or MCT oil. You blend it to make it frothy, similar to a latte. Along with chaffles, it’s become a trend in the keto diet community.
The Bulletproof coffee brand, founded by Dave Asprey, is known for making coffee with butter. Many people use “Bulletproof coffee” generically to describe keto butter coffee, but the company actually has the registered trademark to the term. My “bulletproof coffee recipe” is not endorsed by or affiliated with them, but I do like to use Bulletproof coffee beans with it.
This simple drink has become such a staple in my life that I even included it in The Easy Keto Cookbook. And when I want a sweet bulletproof coffee, I just add keto coffee syrup!

Bulletproof Coffee Ingredients
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for MCT oil coffee, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card below.
Main Ingredients:
- Coffee – The original bulletproof coffee recipe calls for mold-free coffee beans free from mycotoxins. However, any high-quality coffee works. Use regular coffee for a boost of caffeine, or decaf if you prefer.
- Butter – Use unsalted, grass-fed butter for the best nutrition and health benefits. This butter has more omega-3s than conventional varieties, which can potentially lower inflammation [*]. Butter in coffee may sound strange, but when blended, it emulsifies for an amazing latte-like feel. You can also use the same amount of ghee or coconut oil if you’re sensitive to dairy, but flavor will differ slightly and the coffee won’t be quite as creamy.
- MCT Oil – MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides. These fatty acids, found in coconut oil, are known to aid in weight loss and fat burning [*] — however, there are several types and not all of them are created equal. Look for an MCT oil blend with C8 and C10 MCTs, or just C8 MCTs for the most potent benefits. (This brand is the most cost effective I’ve found that’s still high quality, or get Bulletproof’s Brain Octane Oil.) While coconut oil is an acceptable substitute for texture, it is not as effective as refined MCT oil in coffee.
Bulletproof Coffee Recipe Variations:
- Keto Milk – I used unsweetened almond milk for this keto coffee recipe to lighten up on the amount of pure fat included, but any keto milk you prefer can work — just keep in mind, the flavor may change. You can also omit it altogether.
- Collagen – If you want more protein in your keto macros in the morning (or just want to take advantage of collagen benefits in an easy way), add a scoop of your favorite flavored or unflavored variety before blending. It’s still optional, though.
- Keto Coffee Syrup – For a touch of sweetness with no added net carbs, try these coffee shop-style sugar-free syrups in hazelnut or vanilla flavors. For plain sweetness that mixes easily, try Keto Simple Syrup instead.
- Besti – For sweet flavor without syrup, use Besti Powdered Monk Fruit Allulose Blend. It dissolves seamlessly into coffee (no gritty texture or settling at the bottom, like most sugar substitutes do!) with 0g net carbs.
- Iced Bulletproof Coffee – Want your keto coffee recipe served cold? Use ghee instead of butter, prepare as usual, allow to cool slightly, then pour over ice.
- Bulletproof Tea – Swap coffee for tea! See how with this bulletproof tea recipe.
- Bulletproof Mocha – Add up to a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder to the blender, along with sweetener to taste. For a caffeine-free mocha flavor, try keto hot chocolate instead.
- Pumpkin Spice – For a more bulletproof spin on this beverage, trade the heavy cream for unsalted grass-fed butter in this keto pumpkin spice latte recipe.
- Other Spices – Try a splash of vanilla extract or a sprinkle of cinnamon, turmeric, cayenne, or even high quality salt right in the blender.
- Toppings – For a coffee shop flair, top your finished coffee with keto whipped cream, sugar-free caramel sauce, or sugar-free chocolate syrup.
How To Make Bulletproof Coffee (2 Ways!)
This section shows how to make keto coffee with butter, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique, to help you visualize it. For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see the recipe card below.
Method 1: Blender
Blend. Add all ingredients to a blender and puree until frothy. Serve your keto coffee immediately.
TIP: You must blend — not stir!
Doing so emulsifies the fats and gets you that creamy, smooth consistency with a frothy top.
Method 2: Milk Frother
Froth. Add all ingredients to a mug or tall glass. Use a milk frother (or immersion blender) to emulsify until frothy, then transfer to a mug if needed. Serve your bulletproof coffee immediately.
TIP: If using a milk frother, leave room for expansion.
Frothing in a mug works best if it’s large, or do it in a larger jar before transferring to a mug. If the liquid is close to the top, it will overflow when you froth it.
Bulletproof Coffee Benefits
Why drink coffee with butter? Aside from tasting like a delicious latte, learning how to make bulletproof coffee keto comes with several key benefits:
- Energy – Rather than causing a jittery feeling, butter in coffee supports a slower release of caffeine. That’s because fat takes more time to break down; blending creates small droplets of this fat called micelles, which bind to caffeine molecules for a more sustained feeling of energy [*]. It can even help with avoiding keto flu.
- Focus – A steaming cup of bullet coffee keeps me super focused when I’m working. MCT’s, which stand for medium chain triglycerides (not to be confused with the bad kind, these are not that!), are a very clean form of energy that is efficiently metabolized by the liver. So, that helps with both staying focused and energized [*].
- Appetite suppression – Using butter in coffee makes it more filling, all while keeping insulin levels low. A good bulletproof coffee recipe does a great job of curbing your appetite, thanks to the MCTs [*]. I drink it in the morning and am usually set until a late lunch.
- Supports ketosis – The MCTs in keto coffee have been shown to help reach ketosis (on a high fat low carb diet) more quickly and to support good ketone levels for this lifestyle [*, *].
Does Bulletproof Coffee Break A Fast?
Whether bulletproof coffee breaks a fast depends on your definition of fasting. Traditionally, anything with calories breaks a fast, so it does not align with this strict approach. However, drinking keto coffee while otherwise avoiding calories may still help you gain some of the benefits of intermittent fasting on keto, such as lowering blood sugar levels, without the typical drawbacks of hunger and mental fatigue. If you’re drinking it while otherwise fasting, it may be best to skip the optional add-ins.
Storage Instructions
- Store: Keep leftovers covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Mix again before serving.
- Meal prep: Mix softened butter and coconut oil together, then freeze in an ice cube tray. Pop a cube or two in your blender before adding hot coffee and mixing. Keep in mind, MCT oil does not freeze well, so this method works better with a minimal amount (or just substitute it altogether with coconut oil, which will solidify).
- Reheat: You can serve your cup of keto coffee cold, or warm gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. However, the fats will usually separate, so you’ll want to blend or froth it again before drinking.
- Freeze: Use a shallow container or ice cube tray to freeze blended coffee. Thaw overnight before reheating and re-blending, or blend from frozen for a cold bulletproof coffee.

0I have tried other bulletproof coffee recipes, and wasn’t thrilled with the result, but they forgot the most important part… the blender!
Thanks for a great recipe!
Maureen
0I use half and half and olive oil, and the granulated stevia works just fine I use a small blender to whip it all up,I don’t have a milk froth machine its comes out really good
Ruby
0Can I use instant coffee (Azera for example) or does it have to be brewed/percolated coffee?
Wholesome Yum A
0You could do that, Ruby, as long as it makes 8 ounces.
Cheryl
0OMG!!! This coffee is amazing. I have to have my coffee in the morning and everything I have tried has carbs in it and all I could taste was the stevia. I am in love with this coffee. the only thing is when I put it in My Fitness Pal the calories come up to 230. What am I doing wrong?
Wholesome Yum A
0Hi Cheryl, it’s hard to say for certain since different macro calculators round differently. You can always input it manually to ensure it’s accurate.
Terri
0It was just ok. Maybe I had my hopes too high. It was frothy, but definitely not my best cup of coffee.
Kevin
0I just started Keto, and I am averaging about 500 calories for my morning breakfast with it being higher in fat percentage. This looks like it is only 110 calories, so I am worried it will not be enough to fill me up before lunch. Should I double the amount?
Wholesome Yum
0Hi Kevin, I’d caution against that since too much MCT oil can cause GI distress. You might want to enjoy a single serving alongside another keto breakfast option instead.
Faith
0I recently started keto and I have been feeling really sluggish, partially because I used to use flavored creamer and I am now just using whipping cream. I have bought stevia and ghee and MCT oil, do I still need to add butter to the coffee or is the ghee fine? I am going to attempt this coffee recipe tomorrow morning and want to make sure I make it correctly.
Wholesome Yum
0Ghee will work, Faith! Just make sure you blend it thoroughly, since it has an oilier texture than butter.
Melissa Knue
0My Magic Blender worked great for this, the froth on top was amazing.
Clara
0I love it delicious
Barb Morrison
0How many calories are in a Keto coffee
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Barb, The nutrition info is on the recipe card above. Thanks!
Tammy
0I made the coffee this morning. I didn’t have mct oil, does that make a difference in the taste? Is there a difference in taste using ghee compared to butter?
Wholesome Yum
0Hi Tammy, a good quality MCT oil won’t add any flavor to your coffee. Ghee may taste a little more buttery than butter itself, so go with what you enjoy the best!
Katherine
0This tastes wonderful, wish it was hot tho, with the cold almond milk of course it wouldn’t be, but still delicious!
Rebecca
0I microwave it for 30 sec after I make it! Bam. hot!
Lyn Hertx
0I am curious why you use butter instead of heavy cream? I have tried it with butter, but much prefer the cream. If butter is healthier, I would love to know about that. It would give me incentive to try the butter recipe again.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Lyn, Butter is a purer form of fat (82 percent fat usually) than heavy cream (which is at most 36 percent fat). However, you can still use cream if you prefer it. I sometimes do this as well.
Sharon Anderson
0Love this coffee. I add vanilla as well and blend in my Nutri-Bullet. So very good and my appetite is gone for several hours. I add a little crushed ice to blend it with and pour it over crushed ice in my cup because I drink iced coffees. Thank you for the recipe.
Linda
0I love bulletproof coffee too. You didn’t mention using a Ninja blender, or one like it, to mix it. It is quick and easy and clean up is a breeze. When I make keto shakes in the Ninja, I can drink it right from the container I made it in as it comes with the tops for that purpose.
Josie
0I make my own cold brew coffee at home — and drink it cold. I mix it up with MCT oil, whey protein powder (vanilla flavor), and unflavored, unsweetened almond milk — I’m obsessed!! I’d love to add butter to it but haven’t succeeded in getting the butter to blend in with the cold coffee and milk, even after melting the butter (it just recongeals — ugh!). I tried using the blender but no success. Any suggestions for blending butter salted into a cold keto coffee? Thanks
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Josie, I’d recommend skipping the butter if you are making it iced. You can use just mct oil, or mct oil + heavy cream instead.
Dee
0The best coffee I’ve ever had
Rebecca
0I know you said that you don’t like using the blender because you have to clean the big thing. Well, I use a 2 c personal blender. Thank you for the article. It was quite good and informative.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Thank you for sharing, Rebecca! Great idea!
Daisy
0Thanks to bulletproof my cravings are gone I love it MCT -I tell everyone about it, been hard to stop snacking- not any more! thanks
Yolanda
0Maya, My daughter and I been doing the coffee since July last year. LOVE it!! Does all you said it does.
We like a little flavor in ours, so we add 1 Tbs of unsweetened coco powder to it , it even more.
Thnx for your sight, benifit alot from it.
We both have lost a total together, 70# to date and still losing.
Pamela Dipzinski
0Hi Maya! I just tried your keto coffee recipe today & I think it’s marvelous. I use an immersion blender because I don’t like to mess up my big blender for one cup of coffee. I will be trying your Fathead Pizza Crust recipe for dinner today. Thanks for the helpful recipes!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Thank you, Pamela! Great idea on the immersion blender if you don’t have a milk frother and don’t want to use a regular blender. Hope you like the pizza, too!
Deborah Lucas
0For the Keto Bulletproof coffee, I use my Nutri Bullet and it works just great! The coffee is amazing, but I agree; it is a lot of calories! But it is SO good, and SO filling! I do not want to eat until the next meal, no snacks which work for me!
Sarah
0Would you have to change anything to have this coffee without doing Keto? Having done full Keto for two weeks, it really isn’t feasible for my lifestyle right now. I want to do something less drastic but still lower carbs, and maybe some intermittent fasting. Would I be starting the day with too much fat if I did this on a non-Keto diet?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Sarah, I don’t think you have to change anything and it’s still very good for a lower carb diet. This version of bulletproof coffee is lower in calories and fat than the regular kind (because it has the almond milk added, and has less butter and oil), so it’s actually quite suitable for a low carb diet too.
Veronica Patterson
0Hi, I started keto on Jan. 1. I have lost 10.5 lbs todate but for the last 1 1/2 – 2 weeks I have not lost at all. I read about not getting enough electrolytes and omega 3 so I just started on that today. (I bought electrolyte power.) Any suggestions? P.S. Love your videos.

Brenda
0Does your nutritional count include the optional collagen?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Brenda, Yes, it does. Thanks for asking!
Brian
0I am making my first cup tomorrow morning – I usually drink my coffee black but I love the idea of using this as a meal replacement. My question is will I be running to the bathroom in an hour after drinks this? I heard that some people have a laxative effect with MTC oil.
Wholesome Yum L
0Hi Brian! I hope you LOVED the recipe. That has not been my experience but I think it is probably different for everyone.
Kristina Lavender
0Can I use whipping cream instead of almond milk?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Kristina, You can, but I’d probably use less. Otherwise it would add up to quite a few calories and carbs.
Mary
0One of my favorites, I have this nearly every morning. Keeps me satisfied.
teresamnj
0So happy to read this! I enjoy keto coffee, but couldn’t wrap my head around how many calories/WW Freestyle Points it was! One coffee made the traditional way (1T butter & 1T MCT oil) pretty much took up half my daily points! I thought about cutting down on the amounts, but didn’t know if it would work as well. I’m going to give it a try using 1 tsp of each instead of 1T! Thanks!
Elaine
0Can MCT powder be used instead of the oil?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Elaine, Yes, definitely!
Tonya
0I just tried this recipe, it’s really good. I Just added some liquid stevia to sweeten it.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I am so happy to hear that, Tonya! Thank you!
Lisa
0You may not see this – I am late the keto game, as I’m learning. dr put me on this program but I have questions. If I make bulletproof coffee in the am – is that considered breaking the fast? Also, do most people eat 2 or 3 meals a day? I think I could do 2 cups bp coffee and then wait until 1 for lunch and 6 for dinner. any tips appreciated…
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Lisa, You can check the guide for how to start a low carb diet here, and from there we have a link to our support group to get these questions answered. Good luck on your journey!

0I’ve only been a member for a few days after searching the net for the best go-to spot to learn all things Keto. The way you’ve presented all the information makes it hands down the easiest way to get started.
So, first, thank you!
Now that I’ve used your affiliate links to get the ball rolling (Amazon has to love me LOL!) with the staples – both food and utensil wise – I just made my husband and myself our first “cuppa Joe.”
Wow and yum and holy Toledo!
Actually I’m going to need to cut back – way back – on some ingredients just to work my way up to fullness and richness! Not used to “healthy fats!”
In the meantime, I’m basically living on your website via PC, tablet, and mobile phone, and loving every minute!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I am so happy to hear that, Theresa! Best of luck and have a great day!
Anne
0Hello, Thank you for this great article. I appreciate your advice. Would you please recommend a beverage option other than coffee? While I like the smell of ground coffee, I detest the brewed flavor. I do like hot tea and cocoa. Thank you!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Anne, I have a bulletproof tea recipe coming up soon. If you like hot chocolate, check out my low carb hot chocolate recipe in the meantime.
Linda Craft
0I have the Keto MCT oil in pill form. I usually take a pill with my coffee & I always add my collagen to my coffee! Thank you for all the info & ideas!

0Thanks for stopping by, Linda! Please come back again soon!
Dawn marie
0Hi, I’m new to keto just one week in. Just wondering if I can use decaf I usually don’t ever drink regular coffee?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Dawn, Welcome to the Keto lifestyle! Yes, you can drink decaf if that’s your preference.
Mary
0So easy and delicious. Thank you!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I am so happy to hear that, Mary! Thanks for stopping by!
Melissa
0I drink my coffee cold. I assume this won’t work, correct?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Melissa, You can make iced keto coffee. Just make the recipe like above and then pour over ice.
Geraldine
0I hadn’t tried the bulletproof coffee with Almond milk but it’s GREAT. I don’t use quite as much of the Almond milk, maybe 1/4 cup but it sure adds flavour to the coffee, which was already great. I like the less butter and MCT oil idea as I have gall stones and can’t always handle the 1 Tbsp of each but the 1 tsp. makes it perfect without the risk of a gall bladder attack. Thank you so much for all the tips and recipes you send.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I am so happy you liked the coffee, Geraldine!
Wendy Dayton
0I wanted to make sure that I could have this coffee during my intermittent fast. Also I would like to thank you for suggesting the milk frother and the links you provide. I am brand new to keto and the links have helped us find things we could not get in stores.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Wendy, The answer is “it depends”. A strict fast is water only (or sometimes plain black coffee/tea), but many people are able to include a cup of bulletproof coffee in a fast without issues. I’m so glad the links are helpful for you!
Barbara Keyes
0Can you sub coconut oil instead of MCT?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Barbara, Yes, definitely!
Doreen
0I have always cried shy of this coffee up until now as it did sound strange and quite frankly unappetising. However, I have just tried your recipe and it will definitely be a staple in the mornings now…and possibly more than once a day as well. Delicious! Thank you for convincing me to try it!!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I am so happy you liked it, Doreen! You made my day!
Shannon Vanover
0What is the difference in protein powder & collagen powder?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Shannon, Collagen is a specific type of protein – the most common in the human body and having some pretty amazing properties.
Donna
0Can I sub coconut oil for the MCT oil?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Donna, Yes, absolutely! I just like the extra energy boost and other benefits of the MCT oil. But coconut oil works great too!
Denise
0Hi! I don’t have a coffee maker, I’m not a huge coffee-fan, but I’m very open to this coffee! Do you think that any kind of instant coffee would work? Thanks so much for your help!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Denise, Yes, you can make this with instant coffee too.
Michelle
0Hi Maya! I LOVE this coffee!! Do you melt your butter and then measure to 1 tsp or is it a solid 1 tsp?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Michelle, Great question! I put in a tsp measured solid, but really either way is fine. I don’t melt the butter separately – it just melts from the heat of the coffee.
Rosie
0I would like to try this. I am new to keto. Is this coffee to take the place of breakfast? Is it a meal in itself? Thanks.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Rosie, It’s up to you, but for me it does often replace a meal. I am less hungry in the morning, and the MCT oil suppresses my appetite, too. I do take a multivitamin with it, and follow with a lunch having plenty of veggies to make sure I’m not missing other nutrients.
Sandi Curry
0Hi, could I make up a large recipe of your keto coffee and the use it like I would the Omega Power Creamer? Do you know how much I would use for each cup of coffee? Seems easier to have it made and ready than to go to the trouble of fixing it for each cup. Please let me know.
Thanks,
Sandi
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Sandi, This is such a great idea! I was just thinking about this last week, but haven’t tried it yet. Let me know how it goes if you try!
Marlena
0In the keto coffee, could a soupcon of heavy cream be used effectively? It may it even more tasty.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Marlena, Yes, you can add heavy cream if you’d like. I find that it’s pretty rich and creamy even without it, though.
Suzanne
0Good morning! I love every recipe of yours I’ve tried, and I’ve lost count! Kudos to your keto! My question is prep for the butter and MCT oil. Do you premake them for an easy drop in? Specifically for work, I’m hoping there’s an easy way to premake them. Thank you!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Thank you, Suzanne! I haven’t done that before, but I think you can. I suppose you could prepackage them together in little leakproof containers. I have small ones from my daughter’s homemade baby food that I may repurpose for this!
Janice Ballantyne
0Where do you buy MCT oil?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Janice, Thanks for pointing out that I didn’t have it linked on the recipe card. Sorry about that – it is not fixed. You can buy MCT oil here. I also really like this vanilla hazelnut MCT oil if you’re into that!
Kimberly Dermit
0I make my coffee with MCT oil and Integral Collagen as well, but instead of butter (which I can’t take on an empty stomach), I put a teaspoon of powdered whey protein in. I do an intermittent fast each day from about 8-9:00 pm until 1:30 the next day, so this coffee really gets me through the morning. I drink it while I’m doing my makeup and then drink a cup of regular coffee when I get to work. The collagen has thickened up my hair like crazy in the past year and I recommend this to all my friends who want to go low carb, try fasting or just want great hair and nails!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Thank you, Kimberly!
Jackie Thomas
0I have a question, if you don’t have MCT oil, can you use coconut oil?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Jackie, Yes, you can!
Torill Haaland
0Hi. I read your comment on Keto Butter Coffee and I am wondering what powder whey protein is. And integral collagen? I do hope you will answer me. Thank you, Torill
Julie Dunnier
0What type of Collagen would I order?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Julie, I like this one.
Debra Daniel
0Hey, Thank you for coffee recipe, I really really like the way you explained it. Me and my family like this coffee so I’m going to try this one this weekend. Can you please tell me if I can use Persian saffron in it?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I haven’t tried that but I’m sure you could!
